After scraping the sides of the guitar all flush and before tackling the binding, I decided to try test fitting the neck. I spent about a 1/2 hour with a razor saw, box cutter knife, and some sandpaper and opened up the neck joint mortise. Below is a picture of the joint, followed by pics with the neck in place. You can see some of the nice curly figure in the neck in the pics. I think it will look great once it has a finish on it!
The fit between the neck and body doesn't look too bad to me considering I haven't actually done any fitting work yet! The neck will have to be fit farther into the body in order for the fingerboard to sit flush with the top, but I'll do that fine tuning later in the neck fitting process.
This is the other side of the neck joint. Once again, not a bad fit.
In this pic you will notice a little mistake I made. When scraping this part flush, I accidentally hooked some of the end grain at the cutaway, tearing out a couple small chips of wood. This isn't the end of the world though, because I can cover this up by putting binding along that edge and no one will ever know..... except for anyonereading this since I told you..... ha ha
