Time for an update! After several hours of chiseling, scraping, using a Dremel, and tons of sanding with my level, I finally have the neck block contoured. I also have the tail block contoured, but the neck block was the major challenge! The birch laminated neck block is very tough and thus difficult to sand. At first, I was afraid of sanding too agressively and taking off too much material. Instead, it took hours and hours of sanding and I still couldn't get the contour right! So I resorted to lower grits of sand paper to help remove more material and finally tonight I have it complete. Below is a pic of my sanding method to get the angle on the neck block. I found that by resting the end of the level on a wooden shim placed on the tail block, this gave me the angle I needed to sand at.
I kept penciling lines on the surface of the neck block so I could see if I was sanding the whole surface evenly.
Finally after sanding away a couple millemeters of material, the angle is looking just about right!
Using my radius gage, the radius of the back looks good. I think the contour on the sides is good, which means soon I will be able to glue the top and back to the sides (also known as "closing the box"). Just have to figure out how I'm going to clamp the top/back.... hmmmmmm
