This guitar, which is a gift for my dad for his and my mom's 40th anniversary, is complete! After gluing on the bridge, I did a rough setup and left the guitar sit for the past couple weeks. Today I tweaked the setup and strung it up with a set of Elixir strings. This guitar sounds and plays great! I hope my dad likes it!
Finally almost done this guitar! A couple weeks ago I glued on the bridge. First I routed a patch through the finish, then glue the bridge on with my homemade bridge clamp. I put strings on the guitar so I could get an idea what all was needed for setup. The neck angle came out a bit high requiring a higher then normal saddle, but overall the tone and action seem to be pretty good. After this picture was taken I did a preliminary fret level and reshaped the saddle and nut. I still need to get the frets leveled a bit better but I plan to let the guitar sit strung up for a few days to see how it settles in.
Its been a while since the last update so just a couple quick pictures after buffing out the lacquer! Installed the tuners and next up is gluing on the bridge and setup!
Pore filling is such a messy process, but once completed and sanded back, the guitar was ready to mask off and begin finishing. The bottom picture is after a couple coats of EM1000 sanding sealer. For the next week I'll be doing the lacquer coats, 2 to 3 coats each day until I'm happy with the finish, probably around 16 coats. Just the sanding sealer brings out the colour of the rosewood and the flaming in the maple. This is going to look great when its finished!
Well I got the neck carved so I believe this guitar is ready for final sanding, pore filling, and finish!!!
Not many updates recently, but I have been working on this guitar. Trying to keep a few surprises for my dad but here is a quick little teaser picture. Next up: fretting, neck shaping, fitting the neck, and finishing!
One of the reasons I have not posted much lately is a secret project I have been working on. My parents had their 40th wedding anniversary this year and my mom asked me to build my dad a guitar as a gift! So without him knowing I have been working on it. The basic specs are vintage style L-0 with sitka spruce top, Indian rosewood sides and back with flamed maple center back strip and tail wedge, flamed maple binding, and abalone top purfling. So far I have the body built and ready to begin the binding and purfling!
