So whenever I've had a few spare minutes, I've been preparing to start building. Using an AutoCAD drawing of a 000/OM I found on the internet (thanks to Christophe Grellier) I printed out a template which I used to make a foam board mold. Hopefully this mold will be sufficient to complete the building of this guitar. If I ever get good at building guitars, then I'll invest in a good wood mold.
This kit had one little flaw, which isn't a big deal. One of the sides was too short. Normally, the sides of the guitar extend to the center of the neck block and center of the tail block. On a cutaway model such as this, the side that forms the bass side of the guitar should extend to cover the entire neck block. Someone at the Martin factory must have messed up because the bass side is only long enough to reach the center of the neck block and there's an extra piece of mahogany that says "board too short", and its just the right size to fix this problem. Its really not a big deal because most of this piece of wood will be removed to uncover the neck tenon later in the build process. Right now I have this piece gluing to the neck block.
Here's a pic of the 2 sides test fitted in my foam mold. I have trimmed both sides and marked the center lines on my neck and tail blocks, so my next step (this weekend if all goes well) will be to glue the sides, neck block, and tail block together. How exciting!!!
